New Ark, Mega-Agropolis

“New Ark, Mega-Agropolis” is a speculative research project that proposes to produce New York City’s food organically, sustainably and locally. Taking advantage of underutilized urban infrastructure, Newark and Jersey City absorb an additional six million people to become a “mega-agropolis,” recoined “New Ark.” The corresponding elimination of suburban sprawl allows for a strategic reorganization of rural and coastal areas, making it possible to produce the entire metropolitan region’s food within 100 miles of the city. The proposal was presented as a film at the Pioneers of Change festival at Governor’s Island in 2009.
