House of Arts and Culture

The creative tension between the individual and the collective defines Lebanon and was the inspiration for the House of Arts and Culture.

A diverse range of artistic programs was projected for the new institution: performance, exhibition, libraries, workshops, cinema. These are contained series of specific boxes, stacked to create a myriad of connections, entrances, experiences, and terraces. This is wrapped with a metal screen that functions as a sunshade, projection screen, trellis and – most importantly – provides a coherent institutional identity. The screen resonates with traditional Arabic mucharabiehs, and also Beirut’s rich modernist heritage of the brise soleil. From the city, the collection of individual elements is read against this unifying screen.
