Hua Qiang Bei Road
A series of five iconic “lanterns” punctuate Hua Qiang Bei Road, Shenzhen’s premier shopping and electronics street. Responding to street’s dangerous traffic while marking its destination status, the lanterns enact an “urban acupuncture” – strategically effecting change only where required.
Integrated with an underground mezzanine and metro stops for four new subway lines passing below and crossing the street, the glowing lanterns twist up into sinuous overpasses, high enough to gain views along the busy corridor. Each contains destination public programs: an electronics museum to the south, an urban information hub in the electronics district, an elevated public park, a “figure eight” observation pavilion and a fashion and design museum to the north.
Designed in collaboration with ZhuBO, the project won first place in an invited competition.
