Yangpu United
WORKac’s proposal for the Yangpu riverfront in Shanghai unites a divided ex-industrial district with a new kind of elevated park. Crossing over the busy Yangpushu Road and below Yangpu Bridge, the network of walkways stitches together currently isolated neighborhoods and seamlessly links them to a new elevated waterfront. It also sponsors new ecological infrastructure, from wetlands designed to encourage remediation of the river, to gardens of native plants and flowers. At ground level, the parkway creates a series of outdoor “rooms” with public programs.
Running in three bands parallel to the river, new mixed-use development will incorporate historical industrial structures into a sequence of new typologies – large-floorplate industrial spaces for the “new economy,” midrise office-park courtyards, and office towers with retail plinths. The landscape will feature native plants and be designed to encourage natural remediation, stormwater control and provide a pleasant year-round outdoor experience. The three bands – forest, gardens and green roofs will continue within the park and be transformed into public greenspaces, combining with trees and water features.
